To be a citizen you must serve the military because the military was made to protect our country. If you don't want to protect your country then you are not a citizen. In the US it is mandatory to register for selective services between the ages of 18-25. if you do not register you can be prosecuted or go to jail. Many disagree with serving the military because they could die at war and lose loved ones. However many men and women die saving our lives and your loved ones at war, it only right for you to do the same and fight for your country if your a citizen.
